Many of us have laughed at the American remake of this film titled Birdcage with Robin William and Nathan Lane. But, the original french version is always heralded as much funnier. Come see for yourself. English subtitles for this one.
On Tuesday, August 24, many of Vallarta’s gay bars sent representatives to Paco’s Ranch for SETAC’S “Manager’s Show”. At this event, employees from each bar did numbers in drag to help raise money for the many programs at Vallarta’s GLBT community center. Participating from Frida’s this year was bartender Mario. He’s the tall one, dressed as Frida Kahlo, below. His performance was a show-stopper. Simply terrific. (note: Mario and his gang are professional dancers since childhood, can ya tell?)
Free Popcorn! Cheap drinks. Cold Beer! A 25 peso suggested donation benefits VES. Don’t miss it! This week with more speakers– improved sound. Last week we raised over 2300 pesos for VES! GOOD JOB!
Hedwig, born a boy named Hansel in East Berlin, fell in love with an American G.I. and underwent a sex-change operation in order to marry him and flee to the West. Unfortunately, nothing worked out quite as it was supposed to – years later, Hedwig is leading her rock band on a tour of the U.S., telling her life story through a series of concerts at Bilgewater Inn seafood restaurants. Her tour dates coincide with those of arena-rock star Tommy Gnosis, a wide-eyed boy who once loved Hedwig… but then left with all her songs.
Starting Wednesday Aug 18, join us each Wednesday Night at 8:30 pm for Movie Night at Fridas. Apropriately, this week, we will watch the movie FRIDA with Salma Hayek. Free popcorn! 15 pesos beer.

Longtime bartender, David, one of Vallarta’s most handsome men, will be celebrating his birthday on Sunday, July 25 and we’ll be throwing a little party for him. Stop by and help us make him feel special! 🙂
Our Anniversary Party at Bar Frida this year was a lot of fun! We had a full mariachi band, Mario and Miguel performing traditional folklorico dances, Cassandra and lots of surprises! What a great night! Thank you for being a part of our family! See you soon! (see gallery below) If you have photos from this event that you’d like to see here send them to us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Bar Frida will hold the second annual Easter Bonnet Contest on Sunday, April 4, 2010! (for photos from the event go to the gallery!)
Customers/Contestants are asked wear a bonnet of their choosing. Be as creative as you want to be! If it won’t fit under the low ceilings downstairs, you can enter through the rear and head straight for the balcony for a cool margarita! Tom says, “If you’ve got a nice basket, bring that too!”
Go simple and pretty or dramatic and splashy! There are great supply stores within a block or two of Fridas where you can make yourself as pretty as, well, a new hat. Get there early! 9pm starts the contestant parade with judges awarding prizes to the best through the night. How eggszzzciting!
With barely any standing room left on Wednesday night, a 10 piece Mariachi band ascended the back stairwell to greet the crowd waiting. The crowd sang and danced for an hour. Beautiful! Then, bartender Mario and dance partner Christian performed two classic folkloric dances that brought down the house! To finish the night it seemed everyone wanted to take it off for Tom! What a great night!
Tom called it the “best party ever!”. It was!
You won’t want to miss what has become one of Bar Frida’s biggest nights: owner Tom Finley’s Birthday Party! This year, we’ll gather on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010 at 8pm or so. Don’t miss the food, live performances and special surprises in store! You never know what the night will bring….
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM!
Frida’s, which has always been a popular hangout for bears visiting Vallarta, would like to extend a warm welcome to all the bears visiting for Beef Dip 2010 which runs for a week beginning January 24. With our drink specials, great food and friendly atmosphere you’ll be in great hands. Have a great time in Vallarta!

On New Year’s Eve 2009, we find ourselves grateful to our customers for their loyalty and friendship. Here’s to a fantastic 2010 for one and all! Thank you to each of you for making Bar Frida a special place for us all.

Many, many THANKS to Tom, Luis, and everyone who donated toys! The Posada at the CAPASITS HIV clinic was yesterday, and it was filled with smiling, laughing, young faces because Christmas came early for a lot of kids living in families affected by HIV and AIDS! Tom and all at Frida: YOU ARE THE BEST!!!
Check out the photos from the CAPASITS clinic Posada on the Vallarta Enfrenta el SIDA, A.C. facebook page (and become a fan if you’re not already!) http://www.facebook.com/#/album.php?aid=358495&id=304306885293&ref=mf
Over the years, Frida’s customers have brought much joy to the children of Vallarta through the toy box we set out each holiday season. It is amazing how fast it will fill up. We have very generous customers for sure!
This year, we’ve set aside a special night, Tuesday Dec. 15, for you to bring in toys for the children. If you can’t make it that night, any night prior is fine. The toy box is ready now! Have a wonderful holiday, wherever you may be. We hope you’ll join us on Tuesday if you are here in town.
If you’ve been been to Fridas Bar and Restaurant in Puerto Vallarta you’ve most likely noticed the giant mural that once was the back wall of the original location. It’s been cut down and hauled to the new location a block away. It hangs along the long wall on the first floor, opposite the bar. When it was originally painted in 2002 by artist Jorge Zavala, it took 3 or 4 attempts and many months of work to get it right.
Now nearly 8 years later, Jorge showed up a few days after the new bar opened and delivered a second piece of art to owners Tom and Luis. Like the first work, it was totally by surprise. Tom had not asked Jorge to paint a portrait of Frida, just like he had not asked Jorge to paint the mural on the wall in 2002, but agreed to let him after he asked. It was a good decision. The mural has been a conversation piece and admired over the years by thousands of tourists and locals. It captures the spirit of Frida beautifully and is full of symbolic imagery.
The new work is grabbing lots of attention too and shows how the artist’s work has matured, I think. Many have threatened to steal it as they leave through the exit, where the new portrait hangs just to the right. So many liked it that Tom decided he’d use it for the new tshirts. Now you can take home a piece of Frida as a souvenir. The new shirts are only 150 pesos. Get yours today while they last.
Here model and bartender David shows off the new shirt, front and rear. Enjoy.
Fridas was the site of the first ever Macho Vaqueros Opening Night Festivities on November 12, 2009. We had a great time with the cowboys and they promise to be back next year! Ride em’ cowboys! Visitors were from all over Mexico.
If you know Abner, you know there is no replacing him. There is simply not another like him. All the best to he and his hubby to be! We love you!
